What's Happening in the World of ILOC & Laverda

Here's a YouTube clip of the shake-down outing for Crispin's spaceframe in stealth mode on 20 March 2010 at Eastern Creek, Sydney.  The bike runs a 120 motor with crank twisted to give 180 throws. 7C inlet & 4C exhaust cams. 


First race was Easter weekend - the full story of that is in another place. The team came 13th overall in class with a best finishing position of 7th - pretty impressive for their first event!  Here's the video -

750_heeled_over_thumbNow that spring is sprung, I thought it would be interesting to find out what some of our racing members are planning this year.  It's also an excellent excuse to re-use this stunning picture of Daniel Wanner's cafe racer styled and tuned SF750 to inspire you to try a track day!

vmcc bhr logo15 April 2012 - the first BHR meeting of the year!  The meeting at Mallory Park saw the debut of the Classic Racer magazine supported BEARS series which really came up to expectations. 

 Race 7 – the Classic Racer Championship for the BEARS saw Ron Maul – BHR’s answer to Darth Vader – storm off the line in the lead, but by lap three it was Rob Paget on his Moto Guzzi in the front.   The next three places were closely contested by Dave Matravers, Ron Maul and Gary Hirons.

In the second leg Dave Maltravers led the field but Ron Maul led on laps 1 and 2 but had to concede victory to Rob Pagett once more. There was a keen struggle between Andy Coles and Mike O’Donnell way down the field which all added to the spectacle. All in all, an exciting innovation & future developments will be keenly awaited.

 austenkear bears malloryPRESTBURY racer Austen Kear got off to a solid start in defence of his 500cc championship crown with two podium finishes as British Historic Racing started their 2012 season at Mallory Park.

Having lost some weight over the off-season Kear was expecting improved lap times, and with some of the best of the country's classic racers lined up against him it looked to be necessary.

The first of two 500cc races came to an abrupt halt when Dave Matravers, one of Kear's championship rivals, went straight on at speed at the hairpin and demolished the front of his G50 Matchless against the safety barrier.  Matravers' father Paul, also in the race, was understandably distracted and also went down and the race was duly stopped.  Neither was injured and both went on to race later in the day. 

At the re-start Kear, starting from 15th on the grid, felt the top six might be the best he could hope for.  But after charging through the pack Kear was delighted to find himself third behind Chris Firmin and Ian Bain.

The second race left Kear with even more work to do after drawing an extremely unfavourable 24th on the grid, but another good start gave him the opportunity to make his way to the battle at the front.  Firmin and Bain were again involved but this time Kear had the better of Bain and finished second behind Firmin.

A new venture for both Kear and the BHR organisation this season is the introduction of the BEARS (British European and American Racing Specials) championship, with sub-classes for 1000cc and 500cc machines.  Kear opted for the 500cc class and over the winter had built a Laverda Barcelona, modelled on the endurance racers of the late 1970s and early 1980s.  Without much opportunity for testing the Laverda is an unknown quantity, and Kear found the machine down on power.

He said: "With a practice day I could have sorted it but I was pleased with the bike otherwise."

Kear still finished second of the 500s in both races and hopes that a lot more performance can be unlocked before the next meeting at Cadwell Park on the weekend of May 19-20.

BHR Spectator Parades

BHR will be holding ACU “PR5” & “PR6” Parades at all of the above meetings. PR5 Spectator Parades give the opportunity to ride your road bike on the circuits having complied with the rules governing these parades.

PR6 Race Parades are for Race Machines only and require an ACU Race or Parade license. Certain Road license types are also permissible.
